I threw myself to the side, landing in a mud puddle as Crimson Copycat lunged with his organ harvester. It crashed against Patrol-Tron’s inert body with a shriek of saws grinding against his metal hide. Several of the scalpels and needles bent and shattered from the force of the blow, sending shrapnel clattering across the wet asphalt.

Even if my suit would have taken that, I didn’t want that blender anywhere near my face. I spun on the wet ground, kicking the off-balance ninja in the ankle. The person disassembler bucked in his grip, and he flung it aside, spinning around to glare at me through the slit of his mask. I stretched out with my powers to suppress them if I could, but there was nothing there. He was solid, he was breathing, but … it was like he wasn’t ‘real’ in some way. He backed off, eyes darting side to side as he looked for an escape route.

I shook my head, the rain flicking off my hood. “Don’t even think about it, pal. There’s no way I’m letting you go twice.” His mangler-cannon whirred sadly, slowly spinning to a stop on the asphalt, as I dashed in and slammed a fist into his midsection. “What’s wrong, don’t you want to cut me into a bunch of tiny pieces? That’s why you came for El Niño and Mesmeric Mummy, right?”

To my left, Patrol-Tron mercifully jerked and started slowly powering up.

The faux Katana scoffed and kept backing away, blocking my blows with impressive speed. “Pah, I have no need of the Nemesis Gene. I have everything I need from you already, Mickey.” He pulled his mask down, revealing my grinning face, flinging the scarlet hood back and shaking out his hair. His soaked-through ninja costume rippled and shifted, becoming an exact replica of mine. “Your face and your reputation were more than enough to get what I needed from the meta-humans in this city with useful abilities.”

I snarled and charged the shapeshifter, never wanting to punch myself more than right now. Who knew how many heroes he had lured down a dark alley at night to talk, mask to mask? What other luckless villains were brought down with people watching and cheering, only to find themselves ripped apart by one of this lunatic’s dissection tools once the civilians headed off to their own lives? He underestimated my rage-fueled speed, and I tackled him around the waist, straddling his chest and raining blow after blow into my own grinning face. It was surprisingly therapeutic.

My copy took each punch like it was nothing, chatting with me amiably as if we were long-lost friends catching up in the grocery store. “Ah, Badger, you’re so predictable. You talk a good story about wanting to fight evil, but you never really work hard until you’re driven by guilt.”

I snarled and clamped my hands down on his throat, just to shut him up. My doppleganger’s form rippled again, taking on the form of a goateed Japanese man in a black suit, and my hands gripped tighter.
